This semester has been long and stressful for me. Overall, I have had an awesome experience at the Awesome High School. I had a lot of eye opening experience, for example, working with my ELL buddy. I think that has been my biggest challenge at the Awesome High School. It has helped me realize that there are going to be some challenges while I am teaching that I will have to reach out to different people for help.

There are a lot of memories that I will take with me from Awesome High School. The most memorable experience will be my video teach and working with the students at Awesome High School. It was a good feeling to be in front of the class and volleyball teaching. It made me realize that I really CAN teach!!! I can’t wait for my student teaching and I have had an amazing time at Awesome High School

This week we learned about questioning. I learned a variety of ways to use questioning in the classroom. When I looked back at my lesson, I looked to see how many questions I asked my students. I also looked at if the questions I asked were higher order thinking or lower order thinking. I think that it is important for my next lesson and my future teaching that I have a variety of HOT and LOT questions throughout my lesson and tests. We also learned how to format a test or quiz. I think that this is important because I have notice that I am weak in formating my papers and power point projects. I think that the objective project will help me improve on learning how to pick questions I want to test my students on and picking out questions that are HOL and LOT.

Today we had the pleasure of a guest speaker. Mrs. Z talked a lot about her first year of teaching. She had a lot of energy and you could tell that she loves her job.  I grasped a lot of ideas about lesson planning. I have noticed that it has been a struggle for me to make my lesson plans this semester. I didn’t think that I really needed to make lesson plans so detail. She mentioned that her lesson plans are very detailed and it helps guide her through her lesson of the day. It is good to make lesson plans detail in case of an emergency or if you get sick, the substitute will just have to look at the lesson plan and know what to do. I recently made two lesson plans very detailed and thought it was pointless until Mrs. Z came into class and gave her reason on making the lesson plan detailed.

Description: This week at AHS, Dr.B has taught us the Madeline Hunter Model and different games/activities to make a lesson more intersting and fun for the students. I think that it is important to have different activities for different lesson pans and different days. A teacher shouldn’t just teach from a power point everyday and not have anything fun planned into the lesson. I am glad that Dr. B gave us a lot of ideas of what kind of activities we can incorporate in our lesson plans. I am presenting my lesson plan to my Health class this coming Monday and I plan to use one of the games.

Analysis: I think that it was important to learn the Madeline Hunter model this week. It was also important to learn the different activities/games that we as teachers can plan into our lessons for the students. Learning the Madeline Hunter Model helps us organize our lesson plans for our video teach and for the future lesson plans. It really helped me when Dr. B had a hamburger on the board and gave us the different steps of the Hunter model into how the making of a hamburger.  This shows that different people have differnet ways of remembering important characteristics. I think that Dr. Bond wants us to become the best teachers we can be and by doing this, he teaches us different ways to engage students in the lesson.

Reflection: I am currently in the process of making my lesson plan for teaching this Monday. I am teaching in my Health class about Alcohol. Whilel making my lesson plan, I have looked at the Madeline Hunter Model and have followed the steps for the lesson. I am also going to be using one of the activities that Dr. B presented in class that I really liked and thought was fun. I think this activity will be fun for the students and get them up and moving in the classroom.

Describe: This week, I worked with my ELL buddy. I went to one of his teachers to see what he was having trouble in and if there was anything that I could help him out with in that subject. I noticed that one of my colleagues had a student in the same class, so we got together and worked with our ELL buddies together. After the thirty minutes was up, I realized that being with another student and colleague helped out. If he didn’t understand me, his friend would explain to him in Spanish. I realized that I need to start breaking down what I say to him more and not use big words or sentences. My colleague and I went through the Biology book and asked them questions about the lesson they were going over in class. During the tutoring, I realized that maybe my colleague and I should have gone over the book and pick out topics that we knew and made a lesson plan on what needed to be taught.

Analyze: During the session, I realized that my colleagues buddy new a lot of what he was talking about. My buddy was just shaking his head saying yes to every question I asked him. The past couple of times I have met with my buddy, I would ask him questions and he would just shake his head yes, or say that he understood what we were going over. My colleague would ask him to describe what he learned. He didn’t know what we went over and he didn’t know how to describe it good enough until he heard my colleague buddy say something about it or get hints in Spanish from the other buddy. Also, I felt that it would have been easier if the teacher would have given us more information about what to go over. One area he told me was to go over vocabulary with my buddy. I asked my buddy if he knew his vocabulary and he said that they write it down and copy from the back of the book. The students do not pay attention to what the word is and that the vocabulary is not on their test. After the discussion about vocabulary, we quizzed them on vocabulary, and we would ask the buddies questions about the lesson. I feel like I didn’t really get the opportunity to go more into the subject, because all I was told was to work on vocabulary. I think it would have been easier, if the teacher had papers that we could have gone over instead of my buddy repeating four vocabulary words for thirty minutes.

Reflection: I think that if my colleague and I would have received the book earlier (last week), we could have gone over it more with the teacher, see what if there was more to do than just vocabulary and see if there would have been any worksheets that I could have worked on with my buddy. It is important to have lesson plans already written out in detail on what you will be working on. I think that if I would have had something written out on what to work on, it would have gone a lot smoother than just playing it by ear.

Describe: This week at AHS, my group had the opportunity to meet our English Language Learners. I thought that I would be a little nervous meeting my ELL but it turned out that I was excited to get to know what he was like. When we introduced ourselves, I started to point out pictures from my “Me Poster”. After I would tell him a little about me, I would ask him questions about him. He would only give me really short answers. We had a couple of awkward moments and a couple of silent moments. I was digging up different questions I could think of to get him to talk. I noticed that he was shaking his leg for the last twenty minutes. I think that he was a little nervous which was making me nervous. After the thirty minutes of getting to know our ELL buddy, we walked backed to our classroom. I felt bad after listening to all the other students talk about their buddy. I felt that they connected to their buddy and I didn’t have the connection with him. I didn’t feel that great after leaving my buddy because I felt that we didn’t connect like the other students and their ELL buddy.

Analyze: In class, we learned that ELL will have a silent period. After the class discussed their experience with their buddy, I expressed how I felt. During the previous classes, we learn that ELL will have a silent period were they will just be silent and take in their surroundings around them. Dr. B informed me that my ELL buddy is probably in his silent period. Dr. B gave me a lot of great ideas for the next time I meet with my buddy. The next time I meet with my buddy, I had a soccer magazine with me and I let him look at the pictures. After looking at the pictures, I would ask him questions about what he thought the pictures were about. He read a little about different positions of soccer and what players played those positions. I think that this session was better and I am hoping for the rest of the session to get better as the semester goes on.

Reflection: I have realized that not all things are going to come easy to me. I am glad that I am getting the experience of working with English Language Learners. This will give me the opportunity to grow as a teacher and learn about the different cultures of students. Throughout this semester, I will be learning different strategies for connecting with my ELL and I will use these strategies for my future teaching.

Describe: I am currently an Intern at AHS. At the beginning of the semester, I was a little nervous and did not know what to expect for the first day. I realized that there is a lot of helpful information that is given to us by Dr. B. Dr. B has taught us a lot about how to preassess your students for the first couple of weeks. In high school I could only think of a couple of teachers who would sign us activities that were preassessing us.

Analyze: Dr.B has given us a couple of activities that will help us preassess our students in the future. One activity I liked was the “Me Poster” and I can see myself using this activity when I start teaching. It gives the students the opportunity to show their classmates and teacher what they like to do in their free time and what their personality is. The “Me Poster” also shows the students that they might have common interests with other students.

Reflection: I looked forward to continuing and experiencing issues that I know will benefit me as I pursue my teaching career. It has been three short weeks but I feel like I have retained a lot of beneficial information that will benefit my career. I am excited for the upcoming weeks as I will be learning new information by observing different teachings.
