Describe: This week, I worked with my ELL buddy. I went to one of his teachers to see what he was having trouble in and if there was anything that I could help him out with in that subject. I noticed that one of my colleagues had a student in the same class, so we got together and worked with our ELL buddies together. After the thirty minutes was up, I realized that being with another student and colleague helped out. If he didn’t understand me, his friend would explain to him in Spanish. I realized that I need to start breaking down what I say to him more and not use big words or sentences. My colleague and I went through the Biology book and asked them questions about the lesson they were going over in class. During the tutoring, I realized that maybe my colleague and I should have gone over the book and pick out topics that we knew and made a lesson plan on what needed to be taught.
Analyze: During the session, I realized that my colleagues buddy new a lot of what he was talking about. My buddy was just shaking his head saying yes to every question I asked him. The past couple of times I have met with my buddy, I would ask him questions and he would just shake his head yes, or say that he understood what we were going over. My colleague would ask him to describe what he learned. He didn’t know what we went over and he didn’t know how to describe it good enough until he heard my colleague buddy say something about it or get hints in Spanish from the other buddy. Also, I felt that it would have been easier if the teacher would have given us more information about what to go over. One area he told me was to go over vocabulary with my buddy. I asked my buddy if he knew his vocabulary and he said that they write it down and copy from the back of the book. The students do not pay attention to what the word is and that the vocabulary is not on their test. After the discussion about vocabulary, we quizzed them on vocabulary, and we would ask the buddies questions about the lesson. I feel like I didn’t really get the opportunity to go more into the subject, because all I was told was to work on vocabulary. I think it would have been easier, if the teacher had papers that we could have gone over instead of my buddy repeating four vocabulary words for thirty minutes.
Reflection: I think that if my colleague and I would have received the book earlier (last week), we could have gone over it more with the teacher, see what if there was more to do than just vocabulary and see if there would have been any worksheets that I could have worked on with my buddy. It is important to have lesson plans already written out in detail on what you will be working on. I think that if I would have had something written out on what to work on, it would have gone a lot smoother than just playing it by ear.
